Do you like barbecue? We love barbecue. It’s not the healthiest thing, but grilled meat is wonderful. And what do we need in addition to the ingredients? Well, a grill, obviously. There are very many different grills, so, you have plenty of choices to choose from.

All of you will be very familiar with a grill and you will also know that there are basically three kinds of grills – charcoal grills, electric grills and gas grills. Here we look at the ten gas grills that deserve the best ratings for this year.

They are gas grills of various sizes and different designs, because everyone needs something different and not everyone has the same taste. Some have a large garden and lots of friends, and others a small garden and a barbecue is just fun for the family.

Gas grills are also very popular for their easy handling of fuel and cleaning, and some people also prefer gas because they “do not smoke”. The main advantage of gas grills compared to conventional charcoal grills is that it is possible to regulate their performance. Either way, gas grills are one of the most popular grills for larger or smaller grilling with friends or family.

The grill is equipped with four stainless steel burners, each with a power of 15,000 BTU.

It is equipped with Piezo igniters, which are independent and designed to directly ignite each burner. Each Piezo igniter is protected by a stainless steel housing so that food drippings do not interfere with the spark igniting the gas from the burner.

Weber 51010001 – liquid propane grill

grills

This grill belongs to a group of portable gas grills and is ideal for living spaces with a balcony or terrace and is compact enough for traveling, trips and camping.

There is one burner available that provides sufficient power of 8500 BTU, and heats an area of 189 sq in. The body is made of an aluminum alloy which does not require much care and maintenance, and is highly resistant to the heat needed for grilling, even at high temperatures.

The shape of the cookbox, when combined with the shroud, allows for the proper circulation of heat around the food for even cooking, whether you’re using direct or indirect heat.

The cooking grates come in three types of material: porcelain-enameled steel, stainless steel and porcelain-enameled cast iron. The porcelain-enameled steel cooking grates are durable and easy to clean. The stainless steel bar grids retain the heat very well and are also easy to clean. And the porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates combine the ease of the porcelain-enameled with the good heat retention of cast-iron.

grillsThe grease management system consists of an angled grease tray and catch pan. The grease tray rests beneath the cookbox, a safe distance from the burner tubes to prevent the grease from catching fire.

Camp Chef FTG600 – FLAT TOP GRILL

grills

This grill, in many ways, recalls the model of another brand that we have already mentioned, both visually and in its features. But its performance is somewhat different.

The grill has four burners, each with a power of 12,000 BTU; the total output of this grill is, thus, 48,000 BTU. And, as with other grills, even with this grill the burners are made of stainless steel.

The grill features an interchangeable flat top griddle that has a relatively large area of 600 sq in. It can be used as a griddle, grill or water pot heat source. Thanks to the material used and the good spacing of the four burners, the food is heated evenly at this griddle, over its entire surface.

The griddle can also be used for pancakes, bacon, hash browns, sausages, vegetables and even boiling water. After removing the griddle, you’ll find a massive grill underneath which you can use to make hamburgers, chicken, steaks, shish kebabs and more.

grillsThe grease management system is very well-designed and the grease runs exactly where it is intended.

Cleaning the grease canister is very easy and, thanks to its good surface finish, just conventional detergents and water can be used.
It is also easy to clean the top griddle, as well as its other parts.

The legs of this grill are adjustable and fitted with two wheels for easier movement from place to place. The placement of the propane tank is solved by storing it in the right part of the grill and it does not obstruct during cooking.

Two large folding side shelves can be used as a storage compartment for food or cooking equipment. This is used very often and no wonder, as it is very practical.

This grill has a simple design, fulfills the function it is designed for and, thanks to the removable grill, also has versatile use.

Removable top griddle
Large cooking area
Simple construction

Weber Spirit E210 – black

grills

What barbecue fan wouldn’t know this manufacturer. The Weber brand is renowned for its quality and well-crafted products.

This model, the E210, has two burners and each of these burners has a power of 13,250 BTU; the total output of this grill is, therefore, 26,500 BTU.

The grill features porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates, which combine the ease of porcelain enamel with the very good heat retention of cast iron. The grates require no seasoning and are easy to clean.

Its total capacity consists of 450 sq in of cooking space; a 360 sq in primary cooking area and a 90 sq in warming rack.

The burners are made of stainless steel and the burner tubes are made of a singular piece of steel with no welds, making them stronger and more resistant to rust and burn-through.

Controls for each burner give the ability to grill by either the direct or indirect method and the burners are spaced to provide heat across the entire cooking grate, while the burner valves have infinite control settings, so you can fine-tune the heat levels.

The grease management system consists of an angled grease tray and catch pan. The grease tray rests beneath the cookbox, a safe distance from the burner tubes to prevent the grease from catching fire.

Grease is channeled down the grease tray and into the catch pan. The tray easily slides out of the cabinet for cleaning and, when the catch pan starts to fill, simply remove the disposable drip pan, toss it in the trash, and replace it with an empty pan.

The grill is also provided with two shelves that can be folded down, making this grill very compact and, therefore, it is also suitable for small terraces and balconies.

Weber Spirit E310 – natural gas grill

grills

It is no coincidence that here we have another representative of gas grills of the same brand. It’s simple – Weber’s products are simply always good quality.

This model, the E310, is actually an extension of the previous model we have described and is based on the same construction. However, unlike that, the Tonto grill here is designed to use natural gas.

Another difference is evident from the picture – this grill has three stainless steel burners, each with a capacity of about 11,600 BTU, giving a total output of 32,000 BTU.

The weight and dimensions of these two models (E210 and E310) are roughly the same, although there are, of course, differences; this model is slightly larger and also heavier. Its total capacity is 529 sq in of cooking space – a primary cooking area measuring 424 sq in and a warming rack measuring 105 sq in.

Also, a not negligible difference is that, with this grill, it is not possible to fold the side shelves down. They are firmly screwed to the grill body. That’s why this grill is designed for use in larger areas and is not suitable for small balconies.

As we have already said, the construction of this model is actually the same – it uses the same ignition system, the same grease management system and is also equipped with porcelain-enameled cast-iron cooking grates.

This model is designed for the use of natural gas, but there is also a fitting for the use of liquid propane. If you are interested in that model, you can   Check Price

Coleman RoadTrip LXE – 9949 series

grills

This gas grill belongs to a group of compact grills that can be easily transported and stored. Its construction is very simple and does not contain many components.

Although it is relatively small and simple, it still has a very good performance, that’s 20,000 BTU. There are two burners available, which means that the performance of each is 10,000 BTU.

Burners can be set from “low” to “high”, but, of course, it is better to use less performance and slower cooking. It is also equipped with two sliding side tables, which is certainly a plus for a small grill, because this will increase the “work area”.

It also has two cast-iron, porcelain-coated grill grates, which have a total area of 285 sq in. This is a sufficient size for cooking for a small number of people and, of course, one cannot expect more for this type of grill.

grills
As seen here, the stand is collapsible and has two wheels for easier handling.

This solution is really very useful – you have it “all in one” and you do not have to worry about the additional grill components.

The grill also comes in a variety of colors, so, you can choose, for example, green, blue or another – depending on your taste.

Because this grill is really compact and easy to handle, it is very suitable for trips, picnics, camping, etc. And, for these occasions, you can conveniently carry it in the car trunk.

Good performance
Very compact

Cons

Cuisinart CGG-180 – with telescoping stand

grills

This small, compact grill also belongs to a group of portable grills. Its dimensions are well suited for quick use on trips, picnics, camping and so on. Its weight is only 17 pounds, so, you can easily carry it.

There is one stainless steel burner with a power of 5,500 BTU. Although that may not seem a lot, due to its construction and the nature of the grid, which is stored low, it heats up quite quickly.

There is a porcelain-enameled grate with an area of 145 sq in. This is a good size for cooking for two to four people.

Thanks to its telescopic stand, this grill can be used either as freestanding or as a tabletop grill. The grease management system is designed in a simple way, whereby the grease is drained into a drip pan that is placed under the grill.

You have to remember, however, that this is a small, simple grill, with a very simple construction and, therefore, you cannot expect the same things offered by much larger and more robust grills.

Also, because of the design, it is necessary to take more care of the grill and not forget to clean it after every barbecue. Otherwise, it could easily happen that, when you next grill, the grease residue just flares up.

This grill is also available in three colors – black, red and stainless steel.

Pros
Simple construction
Very compact
Various colors

Buyer’s Guide

In this section we will now look at some terms and the things you should focus on when purchasing a gas grill.

Gas grills do not offer the enjoyment of the authentic crackle of charcoal, but they do offer quick grill preparation and easy temperature control when preparing delicacies in a hurry. Professional chefs like to criticize gas grills, but, in fact, they use them too.

Gas grills, of course, have their advantages and disadvantages.

Main advantages

  • Ignition by pressing a single knob
  • Temperature control
  • Long grilling, without the need to replenish charcoal
  • In long-term use they make for cheaper barbecues

Disadvantages

  • With gas grills the smoke can be excessive
  • Higher purchase price than a charcoal grill
  • They are bigger and heavier than charcoal grills; therefore, manipulation of them may be more difficult

What you should focus on when purchasing a gas grill

  • Bottom tub
  • Grill lid – allows indirect grilling
  • Burners – long-life stainless steel burners
  • The temperature gauge in the grill lid – temperature control is essential
  • Side burner – ideal for preparing sauces or attachments
  • Burner control system – continuous regulation of the intensity of the heat
  • Grilling grate – best are cast-iron or stainless grill grates for quality heat transfer
  • Movable construction – the grill will need to be relocated occasionally
  • Lower storage compartment – storage area is never enough

Better grills have three or more separate burners (with separate regulation for each burner), which allow for better heat control and, especially, even distribution throughout the grilling area.

Grill system

The most important device in gas grills is the burners that generate heat. The system, which is located above the burners and spreads the heat up to the grill grate, is the basic thing that you should concern.

The current trend is for steel profiles, placed above the gas burner, which have two functions:

  • distribute (reflect and direct) heat flow
  • create a grilled aroma by evaporating dripping juices and grease

The second modern system is a specially modified grilling grate, which is not perforated in the location of gas burners. Therefore, the grease cannot drip directly into the burner and cannot ignite. It drips down to the bottom of the grill and through the hole at the bottom where it drains into a bowl, which you can easily clean up.

Dripping and ignition of greases

When grilling on a gas grill, grease drips from the food and settles near the heat source. When it reaches ignition temperature, it ignites and burns.

With the best grilling systems, dripping raw materials quickly evaporate. This prevents flare and creates a characteristic aroma.

For the best grills, you will find steel profiles (pioneered by the Weber company) on which the grease evaporates, or sinks down into the catch bowl under the gas burners.

BTU

We often encounter the term BTU. What is it, actually?

“The British Thermal Unit (Btu or BTU) is a traditional unit of heat; it is defined as the amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree Fahrenheit.”

The term “BTU” is used to describe the calorific value (energy content) of fuels and also for the performance of heating and cooling systems. If used as a unit of performance, the correct term is BTU per hour (BTU / h), although sometimes only “BTU” is used.

Gas grills performance

As such, manufacturers report the performance of their grills in terms of BTU units. However, it is not the rule that performance should be as high as possible.

What is important is that the grill has sufficient power in relation to its grilling area.

This powerful grill will be sufficient for normal family use. For simplicity, it can be said that the performance of the grill should be around 8,000 to 10,000 BTU per burner.

So, if we’ve helped you a bit, we are happy and we wish you a pleasant time at your next barbecue.
